Caro Manins DMA Recital with The Confluence of Ways

Vocalist Caroline Manins performs a snapshot of her current work which straddles both jazz and historical music performance practices. Her current Doctoral research explores ways in which mediaeval music and jazz music can creatively interact. Her study involves the analysis and interpretation of ornamental neumes in manuscripts such as the Reisencodex of Hildegard von Bingen, as well as Eastern influences in the music of Iberia.

The music generated is a synthesis of medieval song, traditional songs transmitted through oral tradition, and contemporary jazz music in a bed of subtle improvisations.

Flounder - Wanganui Jazz Club

Roger Manins: Sax

John Rae: Drums

Patric Bleakley: Bass

Caroline Manins: Vocals

Flounder features Saxophonist Roger Manins, Vocalist Caroline Manins, Pianist Ben Wilcock, Bassist Patrick Bleakley and not at all least JOHN RAE on drums and cymbals

Flounder: Our sole aim is to have a bit of fun and a laugh, to be happy and make you happy. We don’t take it too seriously- life is too short (especially for a flounder) and when you’ve got a sideways mouth and  ‘your eyes on the right side of the face’ things look a bit different. So,expect some fishy interpretations of some good old swinging standards (and a few originals) played by the band who even when down they are always looking up.

Press Quotes:

"A berley bomb for the ears'
“They’ve got  eyes on the right side of their face.”
“Even when down they are always looking up.”
“A ground baiting performance.”

Carolina Moon ~ Medieval Adventures in Melbourne

After being on hold for quite some time, I'm really happy to announce that my medieval project Carolina Moon is entering a new phase of life.

From January, I resumed my Doctoral studies and will be travelling to Melbourne mid-month to learn from and play with vihuelist (Prof) John Griffiths, a leading Australian medievalist (lutenist). It's the first time I've engaged with medieval performance style in a medieval context and I'm very excited, and a little nervous, to be working with John on some 13th and 15th century Spanish pieces.

I also think I've had a major breakthrough in overcoming some vocal health issues that have been hanging around for some years, and I still can't quite believe I can put some load on my voice without it getting sick. Amazing! Fingers are still crossed!

I'll be making some posts on FB if you're interested in following my progress.

Wish me luck!
Caro
