Flounder - Wanganui Jazz Club

Roger Manins: Sax

John Rae: Drums

Patric Bleakley: Bass

Caroline Manins: Vocals

Flounder features Saxophonist Roger Manins, Vocalist Caroline Manins, Pianist Ben Wilcock, Bassist Patrick Bleakley and not at all least JOHN RAE on drums and cymbals

Flounder: Our sole aim is to have a bit of fun and a laugh, to be happy and make you happy. We don’t take it too seriously- life is too short (especially for a flounder) and when you’ve got a sideways mouth and  ‘your eyes on the right side of the face’ things look a bit different. So,expect some fishy interpretations of some good old swinging standards (and a few originals) played by the band who even when down they are always looking up.

Press Quotes:

"A berley bomb for the ears'
“They’ve got  eyes on the right side of their face.”
“Even when down they are always looking up.”
“A ground baiting performance.”

Carolina Moon ~ Medieval Adventures in Melbourne

After being on hold for quite some time, I'm really happy to announce that my medieval project Carolina Moon is entering a new phase of life.

From January, I resumed my Doctoral studies and will be travelling to Melbourne mid-month to learn from and play with vihuelist (Prof) John Griffiths, a leading Australian medievalist (lutenist). It's the first time I've engaged with medieval performance style in a medieval context and I'm very excited, and a little nervous, to be working with John on some 13th and 15th century Spanish pieces.

I also think I've had a major breakthrough in overcoming some vocal health issues that have been hanging around for some years, and I still can't quite believe I can put some load on my voice without it getting sick. Amazing! Fingers are still crossed!

I'll be making some posts on FB if you're interested in following my progress.

Wish me luck!
Caro

Auckland Jazz Festival and the Titirangi Festival of Music present:

One of the most creative violinists today, Italian Luca Ciarla creates a moving soundscape in the atmospheric Te Uru Gallery. His sound is a natural synthesis between contemporary jazz and the Italian folk tradition, tempered by a beautiful gypsy touch.

Luca performs solo with loops, then is joined by vocalist Carolina Moon and multi-instumentalist Nigel Gavin, together presenting a program of traditional song from the Mediterranean.

Luca Ciarla - violin (Italy)
Italian violinist Luca Ciarla transcends the boundaries among genres creating a balance between written compositions and improvisation, traditional and contemporary sounds. He has performed in jazz, classical and world music festivals and concert series in more than forty countries and on every continent, from the Montreal Jazz Festival, Melbourne, Singapore, South Africa to Singapore and New York.

“Luca Ciarla has wooed the classical, jazz and folk crowds with his originality” Cover Magazine (Hong Kong)

Carolina Moon - vocals (NZ)
Carolina Moon aka Caro Manins is a UK born singer and composer, whose project palette draws inspiration from a range of medieval, traditional world musics and jazz. Caro has walked a personal and intimate path through the lore and traditions of medieval and world song, traveling and studying in India and France. Her Sephardic CD Mother Tongue has received critical acclaim and has toured nationally and internationally.

Nigel Gavin - guitars (NZ)
Multi-instrumentalist and ex New Yorker, Nigel Gavin is one of New Zealand’s musical treasures. The eccentric range of his musical projects is matched only by his astonishing virtuosity with stringed instruments and his prodigious musical imagination.

A unique and one off collaboration,  this is a meeting of minds that shouldn’t be missed.

Jonathan Besser & The Zestniks w Carolina Moon ~ Aug 7th

  • The Golden Dawn - Tavern of Power (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Wildly Romantic, Zestful Jewish Music by Jonathan Besser & The Zestniks featuring vocalist Carolina Moon.

In this Concert the 'Zestniks will be performing 'Besser's complete 'Gimel 1 Suite'.

'Gimel Music' is wildly romantic, energetically sad, zestful and tuneful music. Gimel music features 'methods of counterpoint', that Besser learned at the 'Mannes College of Music' in 1970's New York City. Now these old ideas mix it up with improvisation.

All the suites in Besser's 'Gimel series' have one thing in common Three. 'Gimel' is the third letter in ancient Hebrew Alphabet. It's Besser's intentions to approach composing all the Gimel music Suites thinking conceptually, using the number three as the guiding 'musical form' (bringing three to the fore). Such as: Three Bar phrases, three Chords (with three inversions) repeating, in 3/4 timings etc. Besser says that he's liberating his Gimel music from music's more common 'square' 4 bar Phrases, in 4/4 timing.

Besser's 6 piece band the 'Zestniks' have been performing together for well over a year. The 'Gimel 1 suite' has already been toured nationally in 2012 and was performed in the Sydney at the 'Shir Madness Jewish Music festival'.

These days the Zestniks 'personnel' are always 'up dating' themselves - keeping the music fresh and vibrant. Vocalist Carolina Moon takes us into a different orbit.

to Jun 30

Caro Manins - Joni Mitchell 'Mingus' Experience @ CJC - Wed 29 June

The music of Joni Mitchell and Charles Mingus for a special CJC concert.

Caro Manins - Vocals
Roger Manins - Tenor Saxophone
Jonathan Crayford - Piano
Cameron McArthur - Double Bass
Ron Samsom - Drums

Joni Mitchell's Mingus album, a seminal recording in the jazz vocal world was one of the most loved and influential recordings in Caro Manins' early musical life.

Mingus composed 6 songs for Mitchell who writes, "It was as if I had been standing by a river, one toe in the water, feeling it out and Charlie came by and pushed me in - sink or swim - him laughing at me dog paddling around in the currents of black classical music".

Mingus got to hear all the songs except for 'God Must Be a Boogie Man', which was completed two days after his death.

Caro Manins brings this project to CJC as a homage to the great man and the great lady, and with a killing band of Manins, Crayford, McArthur and Samsom.
